Abstract

Purpose – This study examines how citizen journalism contributes to disaster risk communication in post-earthquake Central Sulawesi. It seeks to identify citizen journalists’ role in disseminating timely and accurate information to affected communities.
Design/methods/approach – The study employed a qualitative descriptive method, collecting data from 20 citizen journalists and 15 community members through interviews and focus group discussions. A thematic analysis approach was used to identify recurring communication patterns, challenges, and best practices.
Findings – Citizen journalism played a crucial role in delivering rapid updates, countering misinformation, and mobilizing relief efforts. However, challenges included the lack of verification mechanisms and limited access to digital tools in remote areas.
Research implications/limitations – While the study focuses on a single disaster event, its findings highlight the potential of grassroots journalism in crisis contexts. Future studies could explore technology-assisted verification tools to enhance credibility.
Originality/value – The research provides empirical evidence on how citizen journalism complements formal media channels in disaster communication, emphasizing its role in community resilience.
