Promoting Sustainable Waste Management through School Community Partnerships in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Purpose – This project aimed to strengthen sustainable waste management practices through collaborative partnerships between schools and local communities in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Design/methods/approach – A six-month community engagement program was conducted involving four secondary schools and surrounding neighborhoods. Educational campaigns, recycling competitions, waste segregation workshops, and environmental awareness activities were implemented. Data were collected through surveys, waste audits, and participant observations.
Findings – Household participation in waste segregation increased from 34.2% to 76.8%. Recycling collection volumes increased by 58.4% during the intervention period. Student environmental awareness scores improved by 41.2%, while community participation in environmental activities reached 82.5%.
Research implications/limitations – The project focused on urban communities and may not fully represent rural contexts. Behavioral changes were assessed within six months, limiting observations of long-term sustainability.
Originality/value – The study highlights the effectiveness of integrating educational institutions and local communities to promote environmental stewardship and sustainable waste management practices.
